That is an excellent questions! Thanks for asking! Yes, it is a cool concept! It’s exciting to go through the entire month’s schedule and pick out flights that sound fun/have good hours/good layovers, etc.
The bidding is based on seniority - the higher you rank, the first choices you get on your schedule. You don’t get money per se for bidding, but you do get a a guarantee of a minimum of 80 credit hours. Thus, the higher seniority one has (as determined by years of service and, for the new hires like myself, the marks on our exams), the more credit hours will be accommodated to the bidding.
I will have over 100 bids by the time I am finished, but since I am a new hire I am not very likely going to get too many of the flights I requested as other people will have bid for them. Regardless, it’s a fun (albeit time consuming) process and it’s really fascinating imagining all the layover possibilities (even though I know I likely won’t get the good ones)!
